Beth & Alec's rainy Garden of the God's elopement was, as Alec so eloquently put it: definitely memorable. I've shot in Colorado numerous times. I'm well aware of the vastly changing weather, and when I saw that the forecast called for rain and snow the afternoon of their ceremony, I was none too concerned. On a previous trip to Colorado I had inadvertently driven straight into a snow squall. A mere half hour later, while having a full break down in gas station parking lot, the weather was calm and clear. After that experience, not much frightened me, least of all some rain. So I packed my gear and headed up the mountain on that chilly day in May, thinking we would shoot between rain showers. Boy, was I wrong. When I arrived it was heavily snowing, and once the ceremony begin the snow changed over into a cold, moderate rainfall. While the rain did become lighter as the afternoon progressed, it never stopped raining. Not once. This elopement ended up producing one of the most challenging weather circumstances I've endured to date. And yet, the photos turned out so hauntingly lovely.
A mere three days later, on a (mockingly) sunny and warm day in Kansas City, we celebrated once again at Beth & Alec's reception. Their reception was as unique as their elopement, designed in a greenhouse space like I'd never seen. They rented out Panther's Place, an open air bar and greenhouse, and hosted a small dinner for family in a long covered alleyway draped in vines. After dinner, they invited friends to come out and celebrate as well with drinks, dancing, and dessert.
Looking back on it, I think Beth & Alec approached their wedding festivities in an incredibly intelligent manner. They remained true to themselves, created two beautiful events, and embraced the chaos of unpredictable weather. More so, I'm fairly certain this was a rather inexpensive approach to a wedding—if there ever was such a thing—that managed to maintain both style and professional execution without crippling financial burden. From a rainy mountainside to a sunny greenhouse, it was such a pleasure to document all of Beth & Alec's wedding celebrations.
